Is it possible to ride a bicycle in winter: route, tires and preparation

FATRACING · Updated

You can ride a bike in winter if the route conditions, equipment, and clothing allow you to maintain control. Assess the surface of the entire road, not just the temperature near your home. To begin, choose a short familiar route with the option to return; black ice and deep snow ruts require a separate solution.

First, assess the surface and route

Clean dry asphalt
Check shady areas, bridges and places with running water: road conditions can change within a single ride. Your usual summer pace should not be the goal of your first winter ride.
Wet road after a thaw
Consider the possibility of refreezing. Look at the forecast for the time of return, and not just for the start. Provide for bypassing places where water usually collects.
Packed snow and ice
Choosing tires is more important than the size of the pattern on the bike's sidewall. Metal studs improve grip on ice but do not make it equal to dry asphalt.
Deep loose snow and ruts
Spikes by themselves do not solve the problem of patency. If the bike fails or the wheel is clamped by a rut, change the route or walk this section on foot.

45NRTH explains the purpose of studded tires and separately notes: even with studs, winter surfaces require a greater distance to stop. The choice of specific tire is discussed in a separate guide.

What to check on a bike before leaving

  1. Check wheel retention, tire condition and operating pressure. The wheel must not touch the frame, fork or fender; in winter, snow and mud are added.
  2. Check both brakes on a small safe area. Do not start the route with a faulty brake or unclear condition of the pads.
  3. Check shifting and the chain. Choose a care product according to the conditions and apply it according to its instructions; grease should not get on the braking surfaces.
  4. Check the front and rear lights, charge, and mounts. Make sure the light is not blocked by a bag, clothing, or dirt.
  5. Take a suitable inner tube or means of repairing your system, a pump and a phone. Do not expect the usual summer sealant to work at any sub-zero temperature: check the manufacturer's range.

The procedure for routine inspection and maintenance is in Trek home maintenance instructions. About the chain — How to choose and apply lubricant. When in doubt about the serviceability, make an appointment at workshop before the ride.

How to choose clothes for your first winter ride

Choose clothing for wind, precipitation, intensity, and duration. The same set for a leisurely ten minutes to the store and a long sports ride can work differently.

  • The base layer helps manage moisture; the insulating layer adds warmth; the outer layer protects from wind and precipitation. The ability to unbutton or remove a layer is more useful than trying to find one universal jacket.
  • Check that it is convenient to shift and brake in gloves, and that the shoes do not clamp the foot with additional socks.
  • Headgear under the helmet should not interfere with proper fit and fastening. Re-adjust the helmet after changing layers.
  • Start with a short ride and check the comfort after a few minutes of movement. If you are unable to keep warm and use the brakes confidently, shorten the ride.

Describes layers and protection from the weather Trek in the clothing guide. This is an approach to selection, not a table of mandatory items for every degree.

Training example: a trip of 8 kilometers around the city

Suppose the route goes along a cleared bike path, but a short section in the park is often icy. First, choose a detour around the park and check its condition. If there is no detour, the decision on tires must be made taking into account this section, even when the other seven kilometers are dry.

Before starting, check the lights, braking, and clothing near your home. Don't increase the distance, pace, and surface difficulty all at once. For the first ride, it's more important to check the entire kit and the ability to return than to complete the summer training plan.

This is an example of a decision, not a test report. For structured intervals with an unsuitable road, you can choose Home training on a trainer.

What to do after snow and reagents

  1. Remove dirt and remnants of road mix with a gentle bike-friendly wash. Do not direct a strong jet into bearings, connectors, and seals.
  2. Dry the bike and inspect the chain, brakes, and tires. Do not apply new lubricant on top of a clearly dirty and wet chain without the preparation provided by the product.
  3. Check if the fenders are clogged with snow and clean the lights. Record problems found during the ride.
  4. Service electronics and batteries according to the instructions of a particular device. Cold working conditions and charging conditions are different restrictions.

If you don't plan to ride in winter, the preparation is different: bicycle storage in the apartment, on the balcony or in the garage. Material compared with the specified manuals on October 9, 2026; own winter tests of equipment were not conducted.
