The base layer for the bike: fabric, density and fit

FATRACING · Updated

The base layer is body clothing, which works together with jersey and external protection. It is chosen according to the conditions and intensity, and not just by the word "thermo". For a cool sports trip, fabric, density and fit are important: a thing that is too warm or poorly combined with a jacket may be less comfortable than a lighter one.

What task should I assign to the lower layer

Start with the usual trip: how long the movement lasts, how intense it is, whether there are stops and what outer layer is put on top. A light T-shirt under a protective jacket and thick thermal underwear under a thin jersey can give different combinations. Evaluating one thing separately from the rest is not enough.

The bottom layer does not replace protection from headwinds or prolonged rain. If the case blows through an open external material, adding density to the skin does not always solve the problem. The complete set is disassembled in an article about cycling clothing for cold weather; here the task is already to choose what is worn directly under the jersey.

Synthetics, merino and blends

Synthetic fabrics, merino wool and their mixtures are found in base layers for various purposes. The composition affects the care, sensations and drying, but does not describe the entire product. The binding structure, density and fit may differ more than the two inscriptions on the front of the package.

Odlo compares materials and it connects the choice with intensity: synthetic options usually dry faster, merino is often chosen for comfort during prolonged use, and mixtures combine the properties of fibers. This is not a reason to declare one fabric the best for everyone. See the percentage of a particular item and the possibility of leaving in your own conditions.

If the skin is sensitive to texture or seams, check the product when fitting. The marketing word "soft" does not confirm the convenience for you. Don't pick the first unfamiliar fabric right away for the longest outing of the season.

Why denser is not always more convenient

One brand can have light, warm and very warm rulers. But the Warm and Winter designations of different manufacturers do not form a single scale. Even the specified mass of fabric does not take into account the external kit, wind and the nature of the work.

In the Castelli manual density and insulation are selected along with temperature and load. For your own choice, compare two scenarios: a quiet trip with stops and an intensive workout. If the first one needs a reserve of insulation, this does not make the same kit suitable for the second one. The outer layer being removed is sometimes more convenient than too warm a thing that cannot be replaced along the way.

How to try on a jersey

  1. Check the measurements with the table of a particular model, then put it on without unnecessary folds.
  2. Add a jersey or jacket that you plan to ride with.
  3. Lean into a bicycle pose and extend your arms to the steering wheel.
  4. Check if the lower back is closed, if the shoulders are pulling, if the collar is going to.
  5. Evaluate the seams in the armpits and under the straps of the cycling shorts: the pressure may appear in the complete set.
  6. Turn your head, bend your arms and check the freedom of movement.

An adjacent fit should not mean squeezing. A thing with a margin can form folds, and too small can restrict movement. The letter of the size of another brand does not replace its own table and fitting.

Sleeves, collar and application on the machine

A long sleeve adds coverage, but it needs to be combined with jersey sleeves. The short one is more convenient in some combinations with hand warmers. Check the high collar under the buttoned jacket: two tight necks can interfere with turning the head. The choice is determined by the set, and not by the requirement to have all the options at once.

The conditions on the machine are different: there is no usual road airflow, and blowout control is available nearby. A warm outdoor base layer does not have to be suitable for home classes. First set up location and cooling then evaluate the clothes. Do not try to compensate for the lack of a fan only by buying another thermal shirt.

How to check the selection and save the item

Make the first trip short and familiar. After it, mark where the folds formed, when it got hot or cold, and how things combined. At the next check, change one element: then it is clear whether it was the base layer that helped, and not the jacket and tempo that changed at the same time.

After use, follow the shortcut. Wool, blends and synthetics may require different washing and drying modes. Do not transfer the recommendations of one thing to the whole set; the general principle of sportswear care describes GOREWEAR. If you choose protection for a wet day, continue a guide about rain clothes.
