How to store a bike in winter: apartment, balcony and garage
For the winter, store your bicycle clean and dry, in a place without precipitation and constant dampness. Before storing, service the chain, check the tires, and deal with the batteries separately. There is no need to deflate the wheels to zero or coat the entire bicycle with oil.
Where is the best place to store a bicycle
- Apartment or dry storage room
- A convenient option if the bike does not obstruct the passage and can be securely placed. Do not press tires and plastic parts against the radiator. Before bringing it in, wash off the dirt and let the bike dry.
- Glazed balcony
- The glazing itself does not guarantee dryness: check for leaks and condensation. The bike should not remain wet after temperature changes. Store electronics and removable batteries according to their manuals.
- Garage
- Check humidity, leaks, and the location relative to the car: water and reagents should not get on the bicycle. If the room is damp, first solve the issue with the location, and then with the cover.
- Open balcony or street
- For long-term storage, it's better to find a protected space. A cover doesn't turn an open area into a dry storage room.
Trek manual, storage section, recommends protecting the bicycle from rain and sun. For your frame and components, check the additional limitations of the manufacturer.
How to prepare a bike for winter
- Remove dirt with a suitable product. When washing, use a soft stream; do not direct pressurized water into bearings and seals.
- Dry the bike, including the chain. Do not cover a wet bike with a tight cover.
- Inspect the chain, tires, and visible damage. Record any malfunctions now to avoid discovering them before the first spring ride.
- Service the chain according to the instructions for the lubricant used. For liquid lubricant, remove excess from the outside; the procedure is different for a wax system.
- Remove bags with food, bottles, and items that can leak. Write down which removable parts are where.
A soft wash and care for the transmission is described Trek in the Home Maintenance manual. Details about the products and application — chain lubrication guide. Do not spray oil near brake discs and pads.
Is it necessary to deflate the tires
Do not leave a bicycle standing on wheels with completely flat tires. Check the pressure during storage: air gradually escapes from both tubed and tubeless systems. The appropriate pressure depends on the tire, rim and storage method, so there is no single number in bars here.
For a suspended bike, the Trek manual provides its own guideline — approximately half the recommended pressure. This is a guideline for the described storage method, not a mandatory rule for all tires. Check your system's limitations.
For tubeless tires, check the service life and condition of the sealant according to the instructions of its manufacturer. A wet track under the wheel or noticeable leakage requires a separate check: how to find a leak. The operating pressure is adjusted again before the ride; it will be useful pressure guide.
How to park or hang a bike
Choose a stand or mount designed for the weight of your bicycle and your type of wheels or frame. Check the compatibility of the mount with the wall. The bicycle should not fall, roll or rest on the rear derailleur.
Do not clamp a carbon tube with an arbitrary clamp and do not hang it by the hydraulic line, cable or wire. Contact with the holder should not damage the paint. The mounting order is set by the mount manufacturer.
For storage, there is usually no need to remove both wheels. If you remove a wheel with hydraulic disc brakes, use a suitable travel spacer and do not squeeze the lever without it. After assembly, check the wheel installation; friction can help. separate instruction.
What to do with batteries
An e-bike, electronic shifter, computer, and light have different requirements. Find the manual for each model: the charge level, storage temperature, and inspection frequency may vary. Don't leave the device on charge for the whole winter without the manufacturer's recommended mode.
Bosch recommends 30-60% charge for its eBike batteries during long-term storage. This is an example of a specific system, not instructions for any lithium batteries. Remove the battery and handle the contacts according to the bicycle's manual.
Do not send a damaged or swollen battery to regular storage or charge it: contact the manufacturer's service. For sensor batteries, check the condition and absence of leakage marks.
What to check before your first trip in the spring
- Inspect the frame, tires, and attachments. Check the wheel retention if they were removed.
- Pump the tires to the operating pressure and check if it holds. For tubeless tires, check the sealant.
- Check braking, shifting and chain condition. Charge devices according to their instructions.
- If everything is in order, start with a short ride near your home, not an immediate race.
If damage, leakage, or brake failure is discovered during preparation, make an appointment at workshop. When booking, list specific symptoms and storage period — this is more useful than the request 'just lubricate everything'.
