How to lubricate a bicycle chain and how to apply grease

FATRACING · Updated

For the chain, choose a product designed for your bicycle transmission and riding conditions. Liquid lubricants and wax systems require different preparations. First, find out what has already been applied to the chain; then clean it and follow the instructions of the chosen product.

Which lubricant to choose?

Liquid for dry conditions
Consider for predominantly dry rides. The 'dry' label describes the product's purpose but does not specify the same composition and service life for all brands. Check how long it needs to dry before riding and how to refresh the layer.
Liquid for wet conditions
Consider for regular rain and mud. Maintenance and removal of excess are important: a thick outer layer collects dirt. Compare specific durability according to the instructions, not just the word 'wet'.
drip wax
Applied from a bottle, but usually requires a chain cleaned of previous oil and time to dry. Preparation and further cleaning differ from caring for liquid oil lubricant.
Hot paraffin treatment
The chain is removed and processed in a suitable wax system. This is a separate process with the preparation of the circuit, the temperature regime and the inspection of the connector. It is convenient for those who are ready to regularly remove the chain and perform the procedure according to the instructions.

For example, Squirt describes the preparation and application of its drip wax, and SILCA separates drip and hot wax formulations. Claims of watts won do not replace choosing the right maintenance.

What to check before cleaning

Look for any damaged links and excessive wear. If the chain needs to be replaced, a new coat of lubricant will not restore its dimensions. The measurement is explained in guide on chain wear; this sequence is also recommended by Park Tool.

Prepare a stable place, rags, a suitable cleaner, and floor protection. For an e-bike, disconnect the drive. Keep your fingers away from the sprockets and rollers when pedaling. Do not spray products near the brake disc and pads.

If the chain is already waxed, start with the instructions for this product. Complete degreasing before the first transition to wax and regular updating of the wax layer are different procedures.

How to apply liquid lubricant to an installed chain

  1. Remove dirt and old outer grime with a suitable cleaner. Use a brush or chain machine according to its instructions.
  2. If the product requires rinsing, rinse it off as directed. Dry the chain before lubricating.
  3. Apply the compound to the area of each roller in the amount specified by the manufacturer. The bottle with a spout allows you to do this without spraying around the brake.
  4. Spin the chain, allow the specified penetration or drying time.
  5. For liquid oil compound, wipe off excess on the outside with a clean cloth. The goal is lubricated joints, not a wet outer surface.

The procedure 'clean, dry, lubricate, and remove excess externally' is shown in Park Tool instructions. The number and waiting time should be clarified with the manufacturer of the bottle. If after this the gears work poorly, proceed to shift diagnostics.

Why wax cannot be serviced like regular oil

When switching to drip wax for the first time, the previous oil may interfere with the application. Squirt provides degreasing before the first use and its own procedure for subsequent care. Do not apply the rule 'wipe immediately after application' to any wax product: it may need to stay on the chain and dry.

Hot waxing requires the specific order of the chosen system, suitable equipment, and an acceptable chain connector. SILCA separately describes the preparation for its hot wax. Do not heat a random mixture of solvents and paraffin over an open flame.

If you want to change your maintenance system, write down the name of the previous and new lubricant. A request to the workshop to 'prepare the chain for this wax' is more precise than 'just pour paraffin'.

How often to lubricate the chain

There is no universal mileage. Frequency depends on the equipment, rain, dust, and cleaning method. After a wet or dirty ride, inspect the chain and follow the product instructions for maintenance. A dry sound may be a reason for checking, but it does not prove that the chain only needs lubrication.

Educational journal of care: date of trip, conditions, name of the product, date of application and noticed noise. In a few weeks it will become clear when your chain needs care. Do not deduct the chain replacement time from the number of applications — wear is measured separately.

If the pedal sinks or the chain slips, use Analysis of chain skip. Lubrication doesn't fix incompatible parts or a worn cassette.

Frequent questions about chain lubrication

Will a universal aerosol do?
Check the purpose of a specific compound. A water-repellent or cleaning agent is not necessarily a long-term chain lubricant. Do not choose based on a familiar brand alone.
Is it necessary to lubricate the cassette and brake disc?
To care for the chain, there is no need to flood the cassette with oil. Brake pads should not get grease on their working surfaces.
Is it possible to apply wax over oil?
The transition procedure is set by the manufacturer of the wax system. The first application usually requires preparation, which cannot be replaced by adding a new layer.

You can choose tools in cycling chemistry directory, and service is in transmission workshops. Instructions checked on October 9, 2026; comparative resource test of lubricants for the article was not conducted.
