FATRACING PROA cross—country bike is chosen for a short race in a marked circle, a gravel bike is chosen for a wider set of dirt routes and trips. But the names do not specify the same geometry and configuration for all manufacturers. You need to compare specific models, and start with where and how you are going to drive.
On a cross-country lap, repeated acceleration, precise turns, free space for dirt and the convenience of dismounting are important. On a long gravel trip, water supply, comfort on the movement clock, gear range and transportation of things are added to this. Differences grow out of these tasks, but there is no universal boundary between the two types.
One gravel is designed for fast light starts, the other for traveling with bags. One cross-country bike allows wide enough tires for everyday ground, the other is limited by the frame and fork. Therefore, the statement "any gravel is more stable than any cross-country bike" does not help much when buying. Write down your trips: local cross-country, forest training, long marathon, overnight hike. Then arrange them by importance.
See the stack and reach of the appropriate usury, wheelbase, length of rear feathers, angles and carriage position. Comparing only the steering angle is not enough: the behavior of the bike consists of all geometry, tires and landing. The same inscription "54" on two frames does not guarantee the same body position.
Also check the shape of the upper tube and the free space inside the front triangle: they affect the carrying. If the main task is daily trips, evaluate the possibility of installing wings and fasteners, and not just the mass of the frame. Guide to comparing geometry It helps to match specific tables without trying to guess the landing from the photo.
Dimensions and compatibility explains Schwalbe Technical Reference. It helps to test the wheel system, but does not replace the competition position. Installing narrower rubber by itself does not turn any gravel into a bike that is allowed for any cross-country category.
Compare the lightest transmission and the working transmissions at speed, not the number of stars. For a long climb with luggage, you may need a different range than for a short cross-country lap. But switching from one system to another requires checking the compatibility of: cassette, switch, drum, chain and front sprocket.
Look at the attachment points of the flasks, bags and wings, access to them with installed luggage and manufacturer restrictions. For cross-country, it is useful to check in advance whether the bag does not cling to the hand when carrying. Evaluate shoes and pedals on real ground: whether it will be necessary to walk often, whether it is easy to clear the contact and re-buckle up. The list of details is obtained from the route, and not from the desire to assemble the "right" appearance.
If the organizer allows the bike, the brakes are working properly, the tires are suitable for the coating and there are the necessary gaps, the local amateur start often allows you to check the interest in the discipline on the available equipment. First, go through the familiarization circle, try to dismount and carry the bike in a calm environment. Do not make the first attempt at full speed in the starting crowd.
After the start, write down the specific limitations: there was not enough grip, it was inconvenient to carry, the gear was too heavy, the landing was not suitable. Then the next choice will be substantive. If the main problem is in the turning technique, buying a new frame does not have to solve it. If you need a bike for mixed trips, start with gravel's explanation, and before the race — with checklist of the first cross-country start.
The general structure of the discipline: British Cycling. International equipment requirements: UCI, Parts I and V; the requirements of a specific amateur category are checked with its organizer.
