What is a gravel bike and how does it differ from highway and MTB
A gravel bike, or gravel, is designed for routes where asphalt alternates with dirt and gravel roads. It usually has a handlebar with multiple grips and room for larger tires than a road bike. This does not mean that any gravel bike is suitable for difficult mountain trails.
What trips require gravel
A typical scenario is a long ride on mixed terrain without having to return to asphalt. One route can include the city, a gravel road, a field road, and a forest section. Gravel bikes are also used for races and rides with bags, but the requirements for these tasks may vary.
Before choosing, list the actual routes: how much asphalt, how broken the ground is, if there are stones, roots, and luggage. If most of the rides are technical trails, don't start the selection only with the desire to get a bullhorn handlebar.
Permissible use is determined by the manufacturer of the specific frame. The presence of wide tires itself does not permit jumps, descents, or loads outside its category.
How does a gravel differ from a road bike
The road bike is primarily focused on asphalt. The gravel usually has a larger allowable tire size and geometry for mixed roads; there may be fastenings for things. But the racing gravel and the tourist model inside the same type are also noticeably different.
Do not choose by tire size alone. Check the fit, easy gear, allowable clearances and the purpose of the mounts. Modern road bikes also have wide tires, and a separate racing gravel bike may have few luggage mounts.
When choosing candidates, start with frame size, and then compare the geometry of the suitable options.
How does gravel differ from MTB
A mountain bike usually has a straight handlebar, tires for more difficult off-road conditions, and suspension appropriate for its purpose. Gravel bikes are often chosen for distances on roads and relatively moderate terrain. For more details, the differences are explained Canyon in comparison of gravel and hardtail.
Appropriate equipment and skills are needed on rocks, steep technical descents, and roots. Changing tires does not turn a road frame into an MTB. If one difficult section determines the safety of the entire trip, take it into account when choosing a bicycle.
MTB can be more convenient on a regular route if you like its handling. It's better to make a decision based on rides and fit, not on the fashion for the name.
Are gravel and cyclocross bikes the same thing?
No. A cyclocross bike is oriented towards a short technical race with obstacles and carrying sections. Gravel is often designed for long mixed surfaces. Bikes can look similar externally and have overlapping use cases.
Canyon compares them by purpose, geometry and equipment. At a specific start, the regulations set the allowed bikes, tires, and categories. Don't transfer the requirements of international cyclocross to any amateur race.
Understanding the formats will help overview of types of cycling. For our starts, see the regulations TIPACYCLOCROSSA and the description of the track for the selected season.
How to understand if gravel riding is right for you
- Choose two or three routes for which you buy a bicycle.
- Check the size, fit, and the possibility of trying it on.
- Determine the requirements for tires, gearing, and carrying luggage.
- Compare the total cost: bike, suitable tires, setup, and necessary items.
- If you want to start, check the regulations and surface of the selected race.
Educational choice: for trips on asphalt and a grader with a small bag, consider a universal model; for heavy forest trails, add a hardtail to the comparison; for a race, evaluate its track before choosing the lightest possible assembly.
Specific models and price examples are already in selecting gravel bikes for the 2027 season. This is the next step after choosing the purpose.
Where to start after purchase
Adjust the pressure and gear to your route, take a short test ride, and gradually add difficulty to the terrain. Do not test an unfamiliar fit immediately in a long race.
