How to choose the size of a bicycle frame by height
Choose the size according to the table for the specific model and year, using your height and inseam length. Letters M and L, numbers 54 and 56 and wheel size describe different things. A universal height-to-frame table helps narrow the search, but does not confirm a suitable fit.
What measurements are needed
Measure your height without shoes, standing straight against the wall. For the inner seam, stand without shoes, press a book horizontally between your legs like a saddle and measure the distance from the floor to the top edge of the book. It's more convenient to do this with a helper. Repeat the measurements and record the units.
Canyon uses growth and internal suture in its PPS system; Trek also offers these two dimensions for Size Finder. Enter them into the system of the required brand, and do not transfer Canyon recommendations to Trek.
Also write down the purpose: leisure rides, long road trips, gravel or technical trails. Different types of bikes have different geometries and handling requirements.
What do M, 54 and 29 inches mean
- Letters XS, S, M, L
- The size name within the range. M from two brands can mean different frame sizes. Even from the same brand, different models don't necessarily have the same geometry.
- Numbers in centimeters or inches
- The size designation may be related to the length of the tube or the manufacturer's adopted sizing system. Do not consider it a ready-made value for all frame dimensions.
- 26, 27.5, 28 or 29 inches
- This usually refers to the wheel size, not a person's height. Bikes with the same wheel size are available with different frames.
Trek, for example, describes the transition of highway rulers from numerical to letter sizes. When buying an old bike, look for the table of its generation. The size of a fresh store card may already refer to a different frame.
How to read the size chart
- Find the official model card indicating the year and frame type.
- Open the height and inner seam table or the branded selector. Note the recommended options.
- For each candidate, save the geometry and available adjustments: saddle height, stem length, spacers, and integrated cockpit parameters.
- If the measurements fall on the border, request advice on both sizes and arrange a fitting.
Training example: a person with a height of 178 cm and an inner seam of 83 cm enters these numbers into the pick-up of the selected model. If the system shows S and M, the next step is to compare these two frames and check the fit. From these numbers it is impossible to deduce the universal recommendation "always M".
For comparison, available geometry calculator. It compares frame sizes, but does not measure a person and does not select the size automatically.
Why look at stack and reach
Stack — vertical, reach — horizontal component of the position of the upper point of the steering tube relative to the carriage. They help to compare the front of the frames. The position of the hands also depends on the take-out, spacers, steering wheel and grip point.
In the training example, frame A has a stack of 571 mm and reach of 383 mm, B — 600 and 378 mm. B is 29 mm higher and 5 mm shorter at this point. This is a comparison of frames, not proof that B fits a person of a certain height.
If you already have a comfortable bike, use it as a base and go through comparison guide. For saddle and handlebar position, it will be useful to have Seat adjustment.
If two sizes fit
Compare whether it is possible to achieve the desired height and handlebar position within the allowed adjustments. A small frame may have a too low front end; a large one may be too long. A long or short stem does not correct any mismatches.
Do not automatically choose a smaller frame «for sports» or a larger one «for comfort». Check the length of your legs and arms, your usual riding position, cockpit capabilities and handling. If you have limited mobility, pain or an expensive build, it makes sense to discuss the purchase with a specialist in fit before ordering.
For a child, choosing an adult frame with extra space can interfere with handling. The children's section and choice of training conditions are covered in guide for parents.
What to check at the fitting and before payment
- Is it possible to adjust the saddle within the limits of the seat post and frame?
- Are brake levers and shifters available without uncomfortable stretching?
- Is it possible to change the necessary cockpit parameters and which parts will need to be purchased.
- Is it comfortable to start, stop, and handle the bicycle on a short test ride.
- Do the year and size of the proposed frame match the table used?
If the bike is bought used, the right size does not cancel out... condition check. Material compared with size instructions from Canyon and Trek on October 9, 2026; training numbers do not refer to a specific model for sale.
