How to choose an indoor trainer for your home

Updated

Choose an indoor trainer to match your bicycle, app and space at home. For power intervals, you need a controlled trainer with a supported protocol, but for casual pedaling, simpler options are possible. Before paying, check the compatibility of the entire setup, including the axle, cassette and app.

Direct-drive, wheel-on, or roller skates

Direct drive — direct-drive
The rear wheel is removed, the bicycle is mounted on the machine. There is no contact between the roller and the tire, but a compatible cassette or a provided virtual shifting system is needed. This is a convenient option for regular workouts if the frame and budget fit.
Wheel-on
The rear wheel remains on the bicycle and touches the roller. The right tire, pressure and clamping according to the instructions are important. Check the axle type and frame mount permissibility. The simplicity of the design does not mean automatic support for resistance control.
Rollers
The bike stands on wheels with rollers; the usual option requires maintaining balance. A corresponding model is needed to control the load. This is a different scenario than a fixed bike for the first home intervals.

Not all direct-drive models are smart, and not all smart trainers measure cadence the same way. Compare the functions of specific versions; an introductory analysis of the types is available at Wahoo.

First, check the frame and axle

Write down the model and year of the bicycle, type of rear axle and hub width. Commonly found are QR 130/135 mm eccentric and 12×142 or 12×148 mm through-axle, but these numbers do not cover all bicycles. Clarify the necessary adapters and the frame manufacturer's permission for such mounting.

A matching axle does not guarantee that the frame will fit the machine body. For example, Wahoo distinguishes frame check and transmission check. Do not file parts or force an incompatible frame with an axle.

Before ordering, send the seller photos of the rear wheel mount and the exact names of the bike and machine. Ask for a list of adapters included and parts that will need to be purchased separately.

Check the cassette and drum

For direct-drive, the cassette must match the transmission in terms of the number of gears, range, and system standard, and the trainer — by drum. The inscription '12 speeds' itself does not confirm compatibility: Shimano HG, Micro Spline, SRAM XD/XDR, and other standards differ.

Wahoo CORE compatibility table shows that you may need a different drum, cassette and spacers. Use the table for your machine; the list for CORE cannot be transferred to any brand.

If the trainer comes with a Zwift Cog or similar device, separately check the support for virtual shifting by the chosen app. One sprocket instead of a cassette does not provide the usual mechanical gear range. General order for checking parts — in the compatibility guide.

What is more important than maximum power

For interval training, compare the claimed accuracy, measurement conditions, need for calibration, and ERG support. In ERG, the app sets the power, and the trainer changes the resistance. Maximum watts and simulated slope are other characteristics; a high maximum doesn't confirm accuracy at the usual training level.

Check communication protocols and compatibility with a specific app. For control in FATRACING Trainer Bluetooth FTMS is needed. The notation 'Bluetooth' or ANT+ in the product card is not enough. Step-by-step start — in the browser guide, and the choice of service is in the comparison of applications.

Location, noise, and total cost

Measure the space for the bike and the unfolded trainer, leave access to the outlet and space for a fan. If you put away the equipment after each session, check the weight, folding supports, and ease of carrying. Noise depends on the trainer, transmission, and gear; a mat does not guarantee no vibration for neighbors.

Include a trainer, the necessary cassette, adapters, installation work, mat, ventilation and subscription, if needed, in the estimate. Example: with a trainer price of 40,000 ₽, parts and installation 6,000 ₽, fan and mat 5,000 ₽, the initial expenses will be 51,000 ₽. This is a training estimate, not current store prices.

Compare offers in machine directory and marketplace. Additional equipment is covered separately.

How to check a used indoor trainer before buying

  1. Identify the exact model and generation by the markings. Check the power supply, supports, mounts, and set of adapters.
  2. Ask to see how it works with a compatible bicycle: noise, play, readings, and resistance control.
  3. Check your connection in the app you're going to use. The appearance of the device in Bluetooth does not check ERG.
  4. Specify the origin, warranty and the opportunity to buy a specific drum or adapter.

If the seller only shows the indicator light, the rest of the functionality remains unknown. Physical testing of the models for this article was not conducted: the selection order is based on their documentation. Source verification — October 9, 2026.
