How to transport a bike to a race

1. Plan the route to the starting town

Choose a race in calendar and check the address for picking up the number. It may be convenient to get to the nearest airport or station, but from there to the start it can be difficult, especially with a large box.

• Who actually performs each flight or train?
• Does the bike fit into the selected packaging and transfer?
• Where to store the box during the race?
• When to assemble and check the bicycle?
• How to return after finishing or dropping out?

If the flight involves a layover, check your luggage at each leg. Keep the carrier's response and confirmation of the service for the return route as well.

2. Compare airline conditions

Below are the published conditions checked on October 8, 2026. They help choose a tariff; check the final surcharges and baggage allowances in your booking.

S7 Airlines

In official S7 memo The bike is added free of charge to the ticket with luggage. The limit is 23 kg for Economy Standard, 32 kg for Economy Plus and business class; dimensions are not limited. For Economy Basic, the luggage space is paid for, and anything over 23 kg is considered overweight. Weight is counted together with packaging.

«Ural Airlines»

Sports equipment rules They classify a bicycle as one item up to 23 kg and 203 cm in total measurements. Sports equipment is included in the free allowance, except for the 'Promo' group, where it is charged at excess baggage rates. This is not a promise of additional free space beyond your luggage.

Utair

Official Utair instructions includes sports equipment in the Optimum, Premium and Eurobusiness tariffs. On Minimum, the service is selected separately; the Status program has exceptions. Check the cost and weight limit according to the current rules and your flight. The carrier's instructions state that registration at the airport is more expensive than pre-booking.

«Pobeda»: a cyclist's experience

Alexander Apolosov in the channel post «Work is going fine» explains that he chooses Pobeda for about 90% of his flights with a bike and flies about 6–8 times a year. According to his experience, the bike is paid for separately: the post indicates 2,000 ₽ and the option to add it to the cheapest fare with hand luggage. Alexander himself prefers the maximum fare for XXL seats, additional luggage, and the option to return.

This selection refers to a regular bicycle. For an electric bicycle and a battery, separate conditions of transportation are needed.

3. For the train, check the specific composition

Don't apply commuter train rules to a long-distance train. On RZD website find the baggage and carry-on rules, and then check the conditions of your train carrier.

The general hand luggage limit on long-distance trains is up to 36 kg and 180 cm in the sum of three measurements; for SV class — up to 50 kg. This is the limit per ticket for all luggage, not a separate free bike limit. In Section XIII of the current Regulations of transportation (Order of the Ministry of Transport No. 352, edition 12 January 2026) The list of oversized items is referred to the carrier's rules. Item 180 provides for an object accepted for an additional fee, a baggage tariff of 30 kg and a receipt 'luggage in hand' at the ticket office. This is a calculated tariff category, not a statement about the weight of your bicycle.

Before purchasing, find out if the selected packaging is allowed, where it will be placed and whether a separate baggage service is needed. If you are counting on a baggage compartment, confirm its availability in a specific train and the method of registration. Save the box dimensions for contacting support.

On the train, check the rules of your commuter company, route, and travel time. The presence of a free period in one direction does not mean free transportation everywhere.

North-Western PPK: hand luggage

In rules for travel and a memo on hand luggage A free allowance up to 36 kg and 180 cm in the sum of three measurements is specified. It applies to all hand luggage per ticket. This is not confirmation of free transportation of an assembled bike: its ticket and placement must be clarified for your train. Passages cannot be occupied by luggage. An item larger than 180 cm is paid for separately regardless of weight; one such item is allowed per ticket. On SZPPK memo The fixed fee for excess carry-on baggage depends on the region of boarding. Do not add up the fares of all regions through which the train passes. In tariff table As of the date of checking, 65 ₽ are indicated for St. Petersburg and 37 ₽ for the Novgorod Region. Perm PPK: assembled bicycle

Carrier rules Different train types: in a regular electric train, the bicycle is placed in the vestibule or in the section with special mounts; in the Lastochka, boarding is done in the first or last carriage. Boarding and disembarking of other passengers must remain unobstructed. These conditions do not apply to Lastochka of other carriers.

4. Bicycle on the train: experience of 'Novgorodsky Trakt'

The author considers it less convenient and allows it for a group occupying an entire compartment. The amount of disassembly depends on the bicycle and the available space: removing the front wheel may not be enough. Before paying, check with the carrier the permissible placement.

The price from the post refers to the author's trips in 2025. Calculate the cost for your route when registering; the presence of a passenger ticket by itself does not confirm the payment of the bike.

• Keep your receipt and find out the carriage number with luggage compartment before boarding.
• Keep the removed wheels and small parts with the bike so that nothing is left in the carriage.
• Discuss unloading assistance in advance; do not count on extended parking.
• Keep aisles and exits clear: paying for transportation does not allow you to block them with a bike.

For your trip, check the carrier and their rules: the name 'Lastochka' does not determine the conditions for transportation. Do not include unofficial free transportation from the post in your travel plan.

5. When sending, separately allow extra time

Calculate shipping with your chosen carrier based on the external dimensions and weight of the packed bicycle. Include the delivery addresses, packaging or crating, door-to-door delivery, declared value, and planned arrival date in your request.

Specify the procedure for inspection during delivery and actions in case of damage. Compare the written terms, not just the first digit of the calculator. The return shipment also needs to be planned: the delivery point may not be open on race day.

Self-packing instructions It requires preparing the cargo even before handing it over to the driver when picking up from the address. Repacking is done at the terminal, so it does not protect the first leg of the journey. Inside, the bicycle and removed parts need to be secured, protruding parts protected and the possibility of inspection left before the final closure of the packaging.

Save the calculation with cargo parameters and selected services. There is no single tariff or guaranteed deadline for all transport companies.

6. Calculate the road in both directions

Keep the return deposit for the rented box as a separate line: it increases the required amount for the duration of the trip, but not the expense if returned in full. Do not add the prepayment, which is included in the rental price, a second time.
