How to choose a bike trainer

FATRACING · Updated

A good first conversation with a coach starts with your goal and a real schedule. Before paying, you should understand who will make the plan, how it will be changed and what you will get when the training does not go according to plan.

Describe the task and limitations

Formulate a specific goal: finish the first race, prepare for a mountain route, improve your time trial result, or learn to train regularly. Specify the start date, available days and hours, trips, and family limitations.

Prepare an example of a regular week and a few recent workouts. Separately, tell us about the breaks, well-being and restrictions set by the doctor. Promising to study for ten hours when there are only five on the calendar will make even a detailed plan uncomfortable.

If you haven't decided on the start yet, first read guide to choosing the first race.

Check out the experience with a similar task

In directory of trainers see the discipline and format of the work, then clarify the details personally. Preparing for the highway, technical MTB and the first long gravel can require different skills. Face-to-face classes are important for technology; remote file analysis by itself does not show how you pass the turn.

  • What kind of education and additional training does the coach have?
  • Is there any experience with amateurs of your level and a similar work schedule?
  • How was the work built in comparable cases and what had to be changed?
  • Is it possible to see an impersonal example of feedback?

A coach's own athletic performance is useful as context. Separately evaluate the ability to explain tasks and adapt them to another person. The places of students also depend on the initial level and conditions, so do not read them as a guarantee of your result.

Sort out what is included in the support

A ready—made plan for a month, a personal plan and regular support are different services. Ask to list the composition of the selected tariff: how often the calendar is updated, which training sessions are sorted out, how many calls are included and how long the questions are answered.

Specify who responds to you personally and how to report a missed lesson. A useful question: "If I didn't have time to do a workout or got sick, when and how will the rest of the week change?" A clear procedure is important, not a promise to be in touch around the clock.

Agree on where tasks and comments live. If Intervals.icu is used, it will help instructions for getting started. Do not pass the account password instead of the access provided by the service.

Specify the equipment requirements

Tell us if you have a machine, a heart rate monitor, a power meter and the ability to drive on the street. Ask if it is possible to run the program with the current kit and what purchases are really needed for the selected format.

Find out how the zones are defined and when they are revised, how the sensations after the lesson and the load outside the bike are taken into account. The explanation should be clear to you: metric names alone are not enough. For reading graphs there is a separate a guide about the load, fatigue and form.

Compare conditions and full price

Before payment, record the cost, the period of work, the start date, and the rules for pausing or terminating support. Ask separately about the costs of subscriptions, testing, face-to-face classes and training fees.

To compare two sentences, write out the same items: updating the plan, the amount of analysis, communication, face-to-face work and additional payments. An inexpensive template and personal support cannot be compared at the same price per month.

Do not accept the promise of a specific location or power growth as a secured result. A training plan is not a substitute for medical admission; an appropriate specialist is needed for health issues.

Evaluate the first weeks of work

Agree on the point of revision: whether it is convenient to receive tasks, whether their purpose is clear, whether they fit into the schedule and whether the promised feedback arrives. Changing a sports result in a short period of time should not be the only criterion.
